Universities are educational centers for providing knowledge and qualifications needed for overcoming challenges to sustainable development. They play a critical role in training young professionals, familiarizing them with the principles of sustainable development, such as development of strategic partnerships, respect and support for human rights, efficient use of resources, and environmental protection. In addition, universities perform a key function in transmitting new knowledge and technologies necessary for promoting sustainable development. University-led research provides the basis for developing innovative approaches and solutions for reaching sustainable development goals.

Equally important is the fact that universities can have an impact on society through an active involvement of students and teachers in project-work aimed at solving specific problems of sustainable development: from conducting sociological research programs of public opinion to realization of economic, environmental and social projects and development of innovations. Universities have a significant impact on social processes and motivate young people to actively participate in achieving sustainable development goals.

What is more, the youth’s fresh perspective, energy and desire for change make them key actors in this process. Participation in research related to solving economic, social, legal and other problems contributes to the achievement of sustainable development goals. Social volunteering and student participation in educational initiatives contribute to the formation of knowledge on sustainable development of society. Finally, young people have the capacity for international cooperation, which is important for achieving global sustainable  development goals. The exchange of ideas among teachers, students and practitioners from different countries contributes to solving international problems and creates the framework for sustainable development.

The conference is designed to bring together representatives of international organizations, governmental and financial institutions, teachers, students, post-graduate students and young scientists from Russian and foreign universities to discuss initiatives and exchange best practices in the field of sustainable development.
